The Lisbon Treaty involves a major transfer of sovereign powers from the Member States to the EU. Citizens from all Member States should believe that the treaty consecrates the principles of a democratic Europe and respects national diversities while all this process shows exactly the opposite. In order to achieve a democratic Union a referenda on the Lisbon Treaty should have been held in all Member States. However, it was an unwritten decision of the EU leaders to ratify the Lisbon Treaty through national parliaments in order to avoid the repetition of "no" votes.
In fact, Charlie McCreevy, Internal Market Commissioner, according to the EuropeanVoice has recently said “When Irish people rejected the Lisbon treaty a year ago, the initial reaction ranged from shock to horror to temper to vexation. That would be the view of a lot of the people who live in the Brussels beltway.” Moreover he added “On the other hand, all of the [political leaders] know quite well that if the similar question was put to their electorate by a referendum the answer in 95% of the countries would probably have been ‘No' as well.” Read the article here.
